Wer sind die Dalits?
Nach offiziellen Angaben gibt es in Indien 201 Millionen Dalits, in Bangladesch sind es 5,5 Millionen Dalits, in Nepal 3,5 Millionen Dalits.
- Dalits („die Gebrochenen“) wurden früher „Unberührbare“ genannt.
- Dalits gelten nach den heiligen Schriften im Hinduismus als „unrein“.
- Dalits werden häufig auf Grundlage des hinduistischen Kastensystems ausgegrenzt.
- Dalit ist man von Geburt an – und im Gegensatz zur Klassenzugehörigkeit, kann der Dalit seinen Status im Kastensystem nicht verändern.

Der Folksänger und Dalit-Aktivist S Sivadas, bekannt unter seinem Künstlernamen Kovan, wurde am 30. Oktober 2015 wegen zweier Spottlieder festgenommen, in denen er Kritik an der Regierung des Bundesstaats Tamil Nadu und an der Ministerpräsidentin übte. Kovan sieht sich konfrontiert mit Anklagen wegen Volksverhetzung und aufrührerischer Provokation.

Amnesty International India begrüßt eine Anordnung durch den Obersten Gerichtshof von Indien, mit der die Gefährdung einer Dalit-Familie aus Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, anerkannt wird. Die Familie war aus Angst vor Kastendiskriminierung und Gewalt aus ihrem Dorf geflohen.
Urgent Action, Uttar Pradesh: Vergewaltigungen angeordnet
Am 30. Juli ordnete ein nicht gewählter, rein männlicher Dorfrat in Baghpat im indischen Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh die Vergewaltigung einer Dalit-Frau und ihrer Schwester im Teenageralter an. Zudem sollen die Frauen unbekleidet vorgeführt werden. Die Schwestern sind zusammen mit ihrer Familie aus dem Dorf geflohen und befinden sich derzeit in Delhi.
